For Brooklyn-based psych-soul band Space Captain’s debut album, All Flowers In Time (Tru Thoughts Records), I developed a visual identity focused on the nostalgia of the music and lyrics that utilized collaged elements that pulled from band members’ own family photos and paintings. This visual style encompassed album and single artwork, packaging design, promotional ad campaign.

In creating tour and show flyers around All Flowers In Time, we started off using a simple san serif font for the LPR-produced release show, and then a NASA-inspired font for Space Captain’s fall tour, connecting to the NASA-inspired shirts I designed for them previously (pictured below). As the band grew and we honed in on their visual aesthetic, we began including a 70’s-inspired font for their band name and other prominent text.

I subsequently art directed Space Captain’s 2020 releases, the double singles “Chester Springs / Birthday Cards” and “Secret Garden / Back of My Mind.” Moving away from the collage style of All Flowers In Time, we used the mood of the separate singles to develop a bold, primary color palette, and added some small illustrations around the cover to retain the intimate, confessional feel of the songs.
